How We Made Our Indoor Basketball Hoop White (Easy DIY)
We recently gave our dining room a little glow-up, and it turned out so kute!! If you’ve seen the typical over-the-door hoops, you know they usually come with bright red rims and colorful pieces. Totally fine… but it just didn’t match the aesthetic I wanted for our house. Yes….I said dining room…I’m not a regular mom.
So we decided to make a quick DIY version and paint it white for a cleaner, more neutral look.
The best part? Everything we used came from Amazon, and it was super easy!!
What We Used
Here’s everything we ordered:
• 18” Basketball Rim
• Rust-Oleum white spray paint (paint + primer)
• Premium Silent Basketball
Step 1: Remove the Hoop Pieces
First, we took apart the basketball hoop. Most of these hoops are really easy to disassemble with just a screwdriver. Sometimes all you need to remove is the net.
We removed:
• the rim
• the net
Taking it apart makes the paint job way cleaner.
Step 2: Prep for Paint
Before giving the hoop a little spray paint makeover, we lightly wiped everything down so there wasn’t any dust or oils on the surface. This helps the paint stick better. Then laid it on a big piece of cardboard outside.
Step 3: Spray Paint the Hoop
We used Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover in white. It works on metal and plastic, which made it perfect for this project.
A few tips:
• Spray in light coats
• Hold the can about 10–12 inches away
• Let each coat dry before adding another
We did about 2–3 light coats to get full coverage.
Step 4: Let Everything Dry
After the final coat, we let the pieces dry completely before putting the hoop back together.
Step 5: Reassemble the Hoop
Once everything was dry, we reattached the rim and net and swapped in the black basketball.
It instantly looked so much better and fit our space way more. You can barely even tell its up there!!!
Final Result
This was honestly one of the easiest little DIY projects. You really can’t find neutral colored basketball hoops anyway!! The white hoop looks way more minimal and blends into the room instead of standing out with bright colors.
Plus, the kids still love it!!! We don’t even use our dining area… so WHY NOT?
